The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issues passports, both in Australia and overseas, to be used as evidence of identity and citizenship by Australians who are travelling internationally, in accordance with the provisions of the Australian Passports Act 2005 and other legislation.

Important Announcements

  • REMINDER: OLD PASSPORT FORMS INVALID FROM 1 OCTOBER 2008. New passport application forms were introduced on 1 July 2008. Old forms will not be accepted by the Australian Passport Office after 30 September 2008. New forms can be identified by the letters F or G located below the small barcode at the top of each page of the application form. Old forms can be identified by the letters D or E located below the small barcode at the top of each page of the application form. Passports that expired more than 12 months ago cannot be used with the new passport application forms. If your passport expired more than 12 months ago, you will be required to provide the original of either your full Australian birth certificate or Australian citizenship certificate to support your application.


  • CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATES - PROOF OF PLACE OF BIRTH, AND GENDER: A document which proves your place of birth, and gender MUST be provided for all full passport applications. This information is a requirement under the Australian Passports Amendment Determination 2007 (No.1). Applicants presenting a citizenship certificate that does not record place of birth or gender should contact the Australian Passport Information Service (APIS) on 13 12 32 for information on acceptable, alternative documents.


  • PHOTO ATTACHMENT on ONLINE PASSPORT APPLICATION FORMS - Please do not attach photographs to internet generated application forms prior to lodgement.
